As Steve McConnell wrote in Software Project Survival Guide back in 1998, software projects fail for one of two general reasons; the project team lacks the knowledge to conduct a software project successfully, or the project team lacks the resolve to conduct a project effectively. Additionally, McConnell reported at the time that in the United States, the software industry employed 2 million people who worked on 300,000 software projects. Unfortunately, nearly 60% of these projects exceeded budgetary or scheduling constraints. Furthermore, of the most expensive projects, roughly half were cancelled altogether because they are perceived as being “out of control.” |

A large factor that drives software projects over budget are project stakeholders not understanding the bottom line impact of errors made at various stages of a project. Because large, critical decisions (which development tools to use, what technical path or approach to take, etc.) are usually made in the beginning stages of a project, followed by incrementally smaller decisions as the project progresses, errors made in the initial phase can be very expensive to fix. In fact, the data show that errors made up front can cost 50-200 times as much to correct at the end of the project. Proper planning at the very outset of the initiative, as well as buy-in from the stakeholders before proceeding to subsequent phases, will minimize the opportunity for costly errors during the project. |
